Electrolyte is an experimental trio from Central New York that seeks to respectfully agitate evolving musical traditions from across the globe. Deeply rooted in jazz and prog rock, these three electro-acousticians are eager to do more, and sound vast with less. It consists of Ithacan Paul Merrill who plays a collection of standard trumpets, quarter-tone instruments, and keyboard; Rochesterian Peter Chwazik, master of the nine-string electric bass, and Denmark native Simon Bjarning, who navigates a sonic landscape of percussion, samples, and mallets. For this, their inaugural show, they will be performing originals by Paul Merrill, folk music from Armenia and Denmark, a piece by Yazz Ahmed (a UK-Bahranian composer and trumpeter), and a work by Ornette Coleman.

Fifth Parallel formed when its members were juniors at Ithaca High School. Rowan Lynch is studying jazz saxophone at the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, NY. His influences include Jackie McLean, Sonny Rollins, and Eric Dolphy. He also fronts the Rochester-based rock band Bug Day. Entering his third year at Ithaca college, pianist Frits Marohn studies jazz piano with Alejandro Bernard, and composition with Jorge Grossman and Evis Sammoutis. Frits’ influences range everywhere from Joni Mitchell to John Adams to Allan Holdsworth. Bassist Misha Bjerken studies with Donald Palma at the New England Conservatory and he has performed with the New Philharmonia Orchestra in Newton, MA and the Boston Civic Symphony Orchestra in Cambridge. His past teachers include Sam Shuhan, assistant principal bass at the Lyric Opera of Chicago, and Nicholas Walker, professor of double bass at Ithaca College.
